Overview
Vallisneria has furnished aquarium backgrounds since the hobby began, for the simple reason that it works everywhere from soft blackwater to liquid limestone. The tapes reach the surface and stream along it, roofing the tank in moving green.
Water note: Adaptable from soft to very hard water; Dennerle documents approximately pH 5–9 and 18–28°C.

Aquascaping use
Plant it as a back curtain or a single flank, and let the surface trailing create dappled light below. It defines the classic jungle and Dutch-adjacent community look.

Planting
Tuck the white leaf bases barely into the substrate; a deeply buried crown rots. From three starter plants expect thirty within months as runners lattice outward.
Established substrate

Light & CO₂
Low light is enough, and unlike most plants it thrives in hard, alkaline, CO₂-poor water by using bicarbonate directly. Injected CO₂ is wholly optional.

Substrate & fertilization
An established, mulm-enriched substrate feeds it; add tabs only in sterile new setups. Heavy iron dosing can actually set it back.
Feeding behavior: Root feeder. Nutrient demand: moderate.

Growth, trimming & propagation
Thin runners ruthlessly or it will annex the entire floor. Shortening leaves with scissors leaves ragged tips, so remove whole leaves instead.

Common problems
- !Colonizes beyond its allotted area without policing
- !Cut leaf tips decay rather than heal
- !Can sulk in very soft, acidic high-CO₂ tanks
