01
Overview
Amazon sword is forgiving but not truly small. Its broad leaves create a strong focal mass and a mature plant can dominate narrow or shallow tanks.
02
Aquascaping use
Use as a background anchor, a specimen behind driftwood, or a broad-leaved counterpoint to fine stem plants.
03
Planting
Set the crown at substrate level and spread the large root system into a deep bed. Avoid cutting all roots back at once.
Deep, nutrient-rich substrate
04
Light & CO₂
Low light can support steady growth, and injected CO₂ is not required. Root nutrition and adequate space are usually the larger constraints.
05
Substrate & fertilization
Supply root tabs regularly in inert substrate and maintain complete water-column nutrition. Pale new leaves can indicate unavailable micronutrients.
Feeding behavior: Root feeder. Nutrient demand: high.
06
Growth, trimming & propagation
Remove complete outer leaves close to the crown. Do not cut leaf blades in half; damaged portions do not regain their original form.
Adventitious plantlets
07
Common problems
- !Outgrows small aquariums
- !Heavy root feeding depletes old substrate
- !Emersed leaves may be replaced after planting
