Cryptocoryne usteriana

The hard-water specialist among big crypts, with long quilted leaves flushed purple beneath, at home even in cichlid-hard chemistry.

01

Overview

Usteriana evolved in the limestone waters of the Philippines and is one of the few showpiece plants that prefers hard, alkaline tanks. The heavily blistered leaf surface and wine-colored undersides make a mature stand look upholstered.

Water note: Unusually tolerant of hard, alkaline water; Dennerle recommends roughly pH 6–8.

02

Aquascaping use

It is the background answer for African cichlid tanks and liquid-rock tap water, where its texture substitutes for the stems that won't grow there. Pair with rock stacks rather than delicate planting.

03

Planting

Plant deep in substantial substrate and leave undisturbed; big crypts build slowly and resent renovation. Runners eventually form an imposing colony.

Substrate note

Deep nutrient substrate

04

Light & CO₂

Low light suits it and preserves the purple underside contrast. It has no meaningful CO₂ demands even in alkaline water where carbon is scarce.

Light requirementLowIntensity categories are comparative, not precise PAR targets.
Supplemental CO₂Not requiredAll aquatic plants use CO₂; this describes whether injection is needed.

05

Substrate & fertilization

Feed the roots with tabs beneath the stand annually. It is otherwise self-sufficient in a stocked tank.

Feeding behavior: Root feeder. Nutrient demand: moderate.

06

Growth, trimming & propagation

Remove ragged outer leaves at the base. Harvest runners at the colony's edge to contain its footprint.

Propagation method

Runner separation

07

Common problems

  • !Too large for tanks under a meter of length
  • !Initial establishment is slow
  • !Melts modestly if moved, though it recovers reliably
