01
Overview
Macrandra's broad, wavy-edged leaves in pure scarlet have been the centerpiece of ambitious Dutch and nature aquariums for decades. It is also a truthful plant; every lapse in carbon, light, or nutrition is written into the next leaf pair within days.
Water note: Soft, acidic-to-neutral water is preferred; avoid treating a single grower's target as a hard biological limit.
02
Aquascaping use
Give it star placement in a red-focused composition, framed by fine green textures that let the scarlet burn. It is wasted, and usually doomed, as casual filler.
03
Planting
Plant strong tops in active substrate under full established light and CO₂ from the first day. Transitions in weak conditions frequently fail outright.
Active nutrient substrate
04
Light & CO₂
High light and rich, stable CO₂ are non-negotiable for the classic form. Soft water keeps its leaf edges smooth and color even.
05
Substrate & fertilization
Generous, consistent macro and micro feeding, with iron always present; unlike many red plants it prefers being well fed. Deficiency shows as pinched, pale new tips.
Feeding behavior: Water-column feeder. Nutrient demand: high.
06
Growth, trimming & propagation
Top and replant vigorous tips regularly; old lower stems weaken and are best retired. Maintain space between stems so the ruffled leaves develop fully.
Stem cuttings
07
Common problems
- !Melts dramatically when CO₂ falters
- !Weak cuttings fail to re-establish
- !Old growth degrades under its own canopy
