Downoi

Pogostemon helferi

Thai keepers named it ‘little star’: crinkled rosettes that pack the foreground with curly, sparkling green.

01

Overview

Downoi grows as low starbursts of rippled, dark-veined leaves, discovered on seasonally flooded limestone streambanks in Thailand. Its curled texture catches light unlike any other foreground plant, and unusually for its habitat type, it appreciates a bit of hardness in the water.

Size note: It can grow taller and looser under weak light; added CO₂ improves compactness but is not required.

Aquascaping use

Mass rosettes into a sparkling foreground band, or nestle single stars between stones as accents. It shines against smooth sand and dark hardscape.

03

Planting

Plant rosettes with the crown proud of an active substrate and give each a few centimeters of clearance. Side shoots soon fill the gaps.

04

Light & CO₂

Medium light keeps the stars flat and dense; CO₂ tightens the curl further. In dim tanks it stretches into a loose, ordinary stem.

Light requirementMediumIntensity categories are comparative, not precise PAR targets.
Supplemental CO₂BeneficialAll aquatic plants use CO₂; this describes whether injection is needed.

05

Substrate & fertilization

Feed root and column both; iron keeps the green luminous. It sulks visibly in lean, soft, unfed water.

Feeding behavior: Mixed feeder. Nutrient demand: high.

06

Growth, trimming & propagation

Harvest side shoots to propagate and to keep mother rosettes compact. Remove aged outer leaves as they roughen.

Propagation method

Side-shoot cuttings

07

Common problems

  • !Melts on transition if conditions are weak
  • !Loses the rosette form without adequate light
  • !Dislikes very soft, acidic water
