01
Overview
Each leaf finishes in a crest of split, curling tips, giving a clump the look of a miniature forest canopy. It keeps every ounce of ordinary Java fern durability while staying smaller and more decorative, which is why it appears in both beginner tanks and competition scapes.
02
Aquascaping use
The frilled tips do their best work at eye level on wood, where light catches the fringe from behind. It makes a lively contrast beside smooth-leaved Anubias or the flat fronds of standard Java fern.
03
Planting
Attach the rhizome to hardscape and give it slightly more light exposure than plain Java fern if you want the crests full and dense. Crowded, shaded clumps grow plainer tips.

04
Light & CO₂
Low light works, though the ornamental branching fills out best under moderate light. CO₂ remains optional at every stage.
05
Substrate & fertilization
Standard water-column dosing; nothing special. Like all Java ferns it flags potassium hunger with pinholes before anything else complains.
Feeding behavior: Water-column feeder. Nutrient demand: low.
06
Growth, trimming & propagation
Thin whole leaves at the base to keep light reaching the interior of the clump. Harvest the abundant leaf-tip plantlets to start new patches or trade with other hobbyists.

07
Common problems
- !Crests grow sparse in deep shade
- !Old leaves accumulate algae in slow tanks
- !Buried rhizomes rot as with the parent species
