Overview
Water violet grows wild in the ditches and fens of Europe, flowering lilac above the spring waterline. Submerged, it forms neat rosette-tipped stems of finely toothed leaves, brighter and tidier than its wild reputation suggests, and clearly happiest below tropical temperatures.

Aquascaping use
Use it in temperate and unheated layouts as a midground bush with gentle presence. Its comb texture bridges mosses and broader-leaved cool-water companions.

Planting
Plant cuttings shallowly in modest groups; it establishes quickly in cool, clean water. It also tolerates being weighted and left to root down naturally.

Light & CO₂
Low to medium light is ample in cool water; heat plus dim light is the combination that fails. It grows well without added CO₂.

Substrate & fertilization
Feed lightly but regularly; cool metabolisms need less. It prefers clean, low-organic conditions reminiscent of its fen habitat.
