Overview
Pearl weed is the aquascaper's modeling clay: trim it low for a carpet, let it mound into hills, or wall it into hedges, and under good light it beads itself with photosynthetic pearls by midday. The Florida native is quick, dense, and endlessly reshapeable.

Aquascaping use
Its shapeable mounds are ideal for diorama-style hills and transitions between carpet and stems. One species can carry an entire layout's topography.

Planting
Plant small tufts densely across the area to be covered; horizontal runners knit them together within weeks. It grips loose substrate lightly, so trim gently until established.
Flexible

Light & CO₂
High light and CO₂ produce the compact, pearling form it is famous for. In lean tanks it grows taller, looser, and stops performing.

Substrate & fertilization
Moderate but consistent column feeding; it responds to missed weeks by pausing. Good flow helps pearls and nutrients reach interior leaves.

Growth, trimming & propagation
Shear frequently and firmly; each cut doubles the density. Uprooted mats during trims signal it was carrying too much height for its grip.

Common problems
