01
Overview
African water fern grows lacy, deeply divided fronds in a striking near-black green, attaching to wood and rock the way Java fern does but with far more delicacy. It comes from fast West African rapids, and that heritage shows in its appetite for flow and cool, clean water.
Size note: It tolerates shade; medium light generally produces stronger optimal growth.
02
Aquascaping use
Attach it in the path of good circulation on driftwood, where the intricate fronds sway and read as underwater ferns should. It suits river-biotope and nature scapes over still community tanks.
03
Planting
Tie or glue the rhizome to hardscape; never bury it. Establishment is slow, and new fronds may take weeks to appear.

04
Light & CO₂
Low light is tolerated but medium light with CO₂ produces markedly fuller growth. Strong flow and cooler water are as important as either.
05
Substrate & fertilization
Feed the column steadily; attached, it depends entirely on the water for food. Good flow carries nutrients into the fine fronds.
Feeding behavior: Water-column feeder. Nutrient demand: moderate.
06
Growth, trimming & propagation
Remove damaged fronds at the rhizome and divide only mature, multi-growth-point clumps. Patience is the main requirement.

07
Common problems
- !Slow to establish and resume growth
- !Struggles in warm, stagnant tanks
- !Fine fronds collect debris in low flow
