Overview
Banana plant is unmistakable, a hand of plump green ‘bananas’ sitting on the substrate from which round lily-like leaves rise on stems. Those bananas are modified roots storing energy, letting this southeastern US native coast through lean spells that would starve other plants.

Aquascaping use
Use it as a curious foreground accent in low-tech and beginner tanks, or let it send leaves toward the surface in shallow setups. Its oddity is the point; one plant is a talking piece.

Planting
Rest the banana cluster on the substrate with the true roots anchored and the storage roots partly exposed. Burying the bananas defeats the plant and invites rot.

Light & CO₂
Medium light keeps leaves compact; brighter light sends stems and pads to the surface. It needs no CO₂.

Substrate & fertilization
The bananas buffer it, but root tabs support sustained leaf output. It is otherwise undemanding.
Feeding behavior: Root feeder. Nutrient demand: moderate.

Growth, trimming & propagation
Remove old surface-bound leaves to keep a bushy submerged form. Pot up leaf-base plantlets to propagate.
