The compatibility chart leaves out the room
I once assembled a community from three species described as peaceful. The fish did not injure one another, yet the tank never felt settled. The danios crossed the full length at speed, the shy bottom fish hid from that traffic, and a solitary centerpiece fish defended the only quiet thicket. Peaceful had described aggression while ignoring space.
I now begin with the aquarium footprint, not its litres. Long active swimmers need horizontal distance; bottom-oriented fish need usable floor; surface fish need access not closed by floaters; territorial species need sight breaks. A tall narrow tank and a long shallow tank of equal volume offer different habitats.
Adult size is the non-negotiable number. Retail juveniles can make large species look temporarily appropriate, and the old tank-size label often follows them home. I check a species account such as FishBase, look for standard or total length, natural habitat, temperature, and diet, then compare several husbandry sources. A plan built around the animal at maturity is kinder and cheaper.
Match water and temperature before temperament
Two peaceful fish are incompatible when one needs cool, oxygen-rich flow and the other requires sustained tropical warmth. Temperature changes metabolism and dissolved oxygen, not just comfort. GH, KH, and pH affect ion balance, reproduction, and long-term condition. Captive-bred animals may tolerate a broader range, but tolerance is not a reason to choose the edge for every species.
I look for a shared middle rather than chasing exact numbers for each label. A modestly warm, soft-to-moderate community might pair a substantial shoal of ember tetras or small rasboras with a compatible bottom group and one restrained focal species. A cooler long tank might center danios and omit warm-water companions. The archetype begins with overlapping ecology.
Plants help by creating shade, sight breaks, spawning cover, grazing surfaces, and refuge for fry. They do not turn plant-eating or digging fish into aquascape-safe animals. Silver dollars consume foliage; goldfish browse and uproot; many cichlids excavate or defend broad territories. Those fish can have planted habitats, but the design must begin with durable plants and their behavior rather than expecting a delicate carpet to negotiate.
Build one community sentence at a time
My reliable template has three roles at most: a dominant midwater shoal, a bottom or surface group with compatible needs, and optionally one focal species. I quarantine when possible and add one group at a time. This protects the biofilter and lets me see how the existing fish use the aquarium before another social layer changes it.
I avoid choosing animals mainly because they are sold as cleaners. Otocinclus need mature grazing surfaces and companions; Corydoras are not debris disposal; algae-eating fish still need species-appropriate food. Every worker becomes a full resident with adult size, waste, and behavior. Maintenance remains mine.
The finished community should leave open water. Dense planting at the back and sides can frame a broad swimming lane, while low foreground growth preserves bottom access. The best planted tank is not the one that holds the longest species list. It is the one in which the plants clarify how the fish live, and the fish make the empty water feel intentional.
Compatibility begins when I stop asking whether two species will fight and start asking whether both can live fully in the same room.

A shoal is a need, not a visual effect
Tetras, rasboras, danios, and many Corydoras are bought as scattered accents when their biology is social. Research on zebrafish shows that shoaling changes with group size, vegetation, flow, age, and perceived threat. Group living supports foraging and predator avoidance; chronic isolation asks an animal to inhabit a social environment its behavior did not evolve for.
There is no magic minimum that applies to every shoaling species, but five reluctant survivors are not made whole by a compatibility chart. I prefer one properly sized group over three token groups. Eight to twelve small fish often express a clearer, calmer shoal than several pairs, provided the footprint and filtration suit them. Some species deserve more.
Schooling and shoaling are not constant synchronized displays. Comfortable fish may spread out, tighten under uncertainty, compete, court, or rest. I watch whether every individual feeds, whether one is persistently excluded, and whether the group uses the full habitat. Behavior is more informative than whether the fish arrange themselves for the photograph.
