The first tuft is a better clue than the hundredth

Mine began on the edge of a slow Anubias leaf near the filter return. It looked like a dark eyelash and seemed too small to justify investigation. Six weeks later the same texture edged the wood, intake, and older leaves. By then I could remove handfuls without understanding why every clean surface was being recolonized.

Black beard or black brush algae is an aquarium name for short, branching or brush-like freshwater red algae, often associated with Audouinella-like forms. The taxonomy is less tidy than the hobby label; molecular work shows that similar acrochaetioid shapes can occur in different red-algal lineages. Its dark grey or black appearance does not make it a separate category of black algae.

Location is useful. Tufts favor stable hard surfaces, older leaf margins, equipment, and places where current delivers dissolved material. Finding it near an outlet does not prove there is too much flow. It may show that this is the one place delivery is reliable while dense plant groups elsewhere experience changing carbon and circulation.

The CO₂ story is strong practice and thin experiment

Experienced planted-tank keepers consistently associate BBA outbreaks with unstable or poorly distributed CO₂, especially when light remains high. A clogged diffuser, shifting gas timing, overgrown stems, an empty cylinder, or irregular maintenance often precedes the outbreak. Correcting those conditions frequently stops new tufts.

That is valuable practitioner evidence, not a controlled aquarium trial proving one universal cause. Freshwater red algae also live in natural streams without pressurized CO₂ systems. Light, flow, grazing, nutrients, surface age, and species ecology interact. I therefore use BBA as a reason to audit the system, not as a laboratory test for one dissolved-gas concentration.

I check the CO₂ start time and pH curve across several days, clean the diffuser, inspect tubing, and move a drop checker through the layout. In non-injected tanks I look for excessive light, accumulated organics, and erratic surface exchange. I also trace current around dense leaves. Increasing pump power is less useful than making distribution continuous and comprehensible.

Remove old biomass without confusing death with cure

I prune leaves that are heavily colonized and scrub removable stone or wood outside the tank in discarded aquarium water. The filter intake and hard equipment can be brushed during a water change. Reducing biomass makes progress visible and keeps dying algae from becoming more organic load.

Hydrogen peroxide and glutaraldehyde-based products sold as liquid carbon can damage exposed tufts, but both are biocides with risks. Sensitive plants, particularly Vallisneria and some mosses, may be injured; shrimp, fish, and biofilms can be harmed by poor dosing or broad treatment. I follow the exact product label, treat conservatively, and never combine improvisational chemicals in a stocked aquarium.

Amano shrimp and true Siamese algae eaters may graze weakened or young growth, but appetite varies and neither animal is equipment. Each has adult size, social, and water-quality needs. I add livestock only when I want to keep it after the algae changes, never as a disposable treatment.

Judge the fix by where new algae does not appear

After cleanup, I reduce light intensity or duration if it was ambitious, stabilize the existing fertilizer routine, restore regular water changes, and avoid another major rescape. In an injected tank, carbon should be available when the light begins and distributed to the entire plant mass. In every tank, healthy new plant growth is the competitor I can sustain.

Old BBA may stay dark for weeks, turn reddish, or remain attached after it dies. Its presence is not proof that the fix failed. I mark a clean patch of wood and photograph one new leaf each week. If those surfaces remain clear while removed areas are not recolonized, the system is moving in the right direction.

The last tufts often persist on old hardscape because they are physically durable. I can live with a little evidence. The important transition is from expansion to stasis: no new leaf edges colonized, no fresh equipment covered, and plants producing clean tissue faster than algae occupies it. Eradication is a satisfying word; stability is the more useful result.

Killing a tuft takes minutes. Making the next tuft unnecessary is the actual treatment.
