Name the texture before reaching for a cure

My worst algae mistake began with a bottle labelled remover. I treated a brown film, shortened the light, stopped fertilizer, and watched the plants weaken while the film returned. It was a new-tank diatom phase, not proof that fertilizer had poisoned the aquarium. I had responded to color rather than identity.

Algae is not one organism and it does not have one cause. Green algae, diatoms, red algae, and cyanobacteria occupy different branches of life and exploit different opportunities. The useful diagnosis begins with texture, attachment, location, age of the aquarium, and what changed before the outbreak.

Remove what you can mechanically while investigating. Scrape glass, twist threads around a toothbrush, prune leaves that are already lost, siphon loosened growth, and restore routine water changes. This lowers biomass without pretending the underlying opportunity has vanished. Avoid changing light, fertilizer, CO₂, flow, feeding, and filtration simultaneously; a clean tank with five new variables teaches nothing.

Read the films: spot, dust, brown, and green water

Green spot algae forms hard, discrete green dots on glass and slow leaves. It resists a soft pad and often appears where light is strongest. Scrape the glass, remove badly covered old leaves, moderate excessive intensity, and confirm that phosphate and other nutrients are not being driven to zero. The goal is stable plant growth, not dosing phosphate as a universal spot-algae medicine.

Green dust algae creates a softer green film, especially on glass in young or recently disrupted tanks. It wipes away easily and can return quickly. Clean it during water changes, avoid daily polishing that spreads material everywhere, and give the aquarium time to mature. Brown dust in a new tank is often diatoms, organisms that build silica-based structures. It usually recedes as surfaces, microbial communities, light, and nutrient pathways settle.

Green water is free-floating microscopic algae, not dirty glass. Reducing light duration, correcting overfeeding or excessive nutrient input, and repeated dilution can help. A blackout may reduce it temporarily; ultraviolet clarification can clear suspended cells effectively, but neither explains why the bloom began. Do not sterilize the filter or replace all substrate in response to water-column algae.

Threads and tufts point toward demand and distribution

Hair and thread algae form soft green filaments that cling to plants and hardscape. They are common when light is generous but plant growth is inconsistent—after a large trim, a missed CO₂ period, an immature start, or an imbalanced fertilizing change. Wind out the strands, reduce intensity or photoperiod to the level the plants can support, and restore consistent carbon and nutrients.

Black beard or brush algae forms dark grey, black, or reddish tufts on leaf edges, wood, equipment, and high-flow surfaces. It belongs among the red algae despite its appearance. Aquarists often associate it with unstable CO₂ and poor distribution in injected tanks. Check gas timing, diffuser performance, circulation around plant mass, and maintenance consistency before blaming a single nutrient concentration.

Staghorn develops branching grey-green filaments, often on older leaves and hardscape in tanks with accumulated organics or inconsistent plant growth. Remove affected tissue, improve debris removal and circulation, and stabilize the care system. Spot treatments with hydrogen peroxide or liquid-carbon products can damage algae, but they can also injure plants and animals. They are targeted interventions, not substitutes for correcting the conditions that keep producing new growth.

Blue-green slime is bacteria, and it changes the response

Cyanobacteria often appears as a cohesive blue-green, dark green, or reddish sheet that peels from substrate and may have a distinctive earthy smell. It is photosynthetic bacteria, not true algae. In aquariums it often takes hold in stagnant, debris-rich zones and can appear when the nitrogen supply available to plants is very low, though real freshwater bloom ecology is governed by interacting light, temperature, nutrients, residence time, and biological competition—not a single nitrate rule.

Siphon out as much mat as possible, improve flow across the affected area, remove trapped organic debris, and restore healthy plant nutrition rather than starving the tank further. A short blackout can suppress photosynthesis, but recurrence means the local conditions remain. Treat chemical cyanobacteria products with caution because killing a large mat quickly can add decaying biomass and reduce oxygen.

Cyanobacteria research in lakes shows why one-variable stories fail: nitrogen, phosphorus, light, warmth, flushing, and food-web interactions act together. An aquarium is smaller but not exempt from ecology. Fix the dead spot, feeding pattern, plant stall, or excessive light that created the opening.

The long fix is making plant growth boring again

Algae eaters are assistants, not system designers. Amano shrimp graze soft films and some filaments; Otocinclus and snails work on particular surfaces; true Siamese algae eaters may browse certain tufts. Their adult size, social needs, water requirements, and waste still count. Do not add an animal solely to solve a maintenance problem the aquarium cannot otherwise support.

For two weeks, hold the photoperiod steady, verify CO₂ or surface gas exchange, remove decay, clean without sterilizing, feed consistently, and dose plants according to the chosen method. Observe whether new algae is slowing. Old algae may remain on old leaves even after the system improves, so the cleanest evidence is healthy new plant tissue and slower recolonization after manual removal.

The aim is not an aquarium with no algae cells. That aquarium does not exist outside a sterile vessel, and a sterile vessel is not a planted ecosystem. The aim is a tank in which plants occupy the available light, carbon, nutrients, and space so reliably that algae remains a film to wipe during maintenance rather than the main subject of the view.

Kill the symptom if you must; remove the opportunity if you want it to stay gone.
